A La Jara man is accused of using force to engage in sexual acts with two minors, leading to a federal indictment with charges of aggravated sexual abuse.
Ronald Mescal, 61, also known as ‘Ron Charlie,’ an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, appeared in federal court for arraignment on a three-count indictment.
Mescal will remain on conditions of release in the custody of a halfway house pending trial, the dates for which have not yet been scheduled.
The indictment alleges that Mescal engaged in sexual acts with a victim under the age of 18 years by using force between July 1992 and August 1996.
Additionally, Mescal allegedly engaged in sexual acts with a victim who was under the age of 12 years between September 2009 and September 2016.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, made the announcement today.
The Gallup Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case in collaboration with the Navajo Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations.
Assistant United States Attorney Robert James Booth II is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
