A 59-year-old Jemez Pueblo man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, prosecutors announced.
Irving Shendo, a member of the Jemez Pueblo, admitted in federal court to engaging in a sexual act with a child under the age of 12 in August 2008.
According to court filings, Shendo’s criminal conduct was first reported to law enforcement authorities in April 2013, but the abuse occurred nearly five years earlier.
Shendo was arrested in July 2013, and has been in federal custody ever since. He remains detained pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.
Under the terms of his plea agreement, Shendo will be sentenced to eight years in federal prison, followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the court.
He will also be required to register as a sex offender, a designation that will remain on his record for the rest of his life.
The case was investigated by the Albuquerque office of the FBI, the Jemez Pueblo Tribal Police Department, and the Albuquerque Police Department.
The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Presiliano A. Torrez as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
