Local Man Convicted of Horrific Crime

Byron Calavaza, a 33-year-old man from Zuni, New Mexico, has pleaded guilty to four counts of committing sexual abuse of a minor in Indian Country. The heinous crimes were committed between December 25, 2017, and January 21, 2018, at a home on the Pueblo of Zuni.

Calavaza, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Zuni, admitted to intentionally and unlawfully abusing the victim, who was between the ages of 12 and 15, for his own gratification. The victim suffered unimaginable trauma at the hands of this predator.

The Zuni Police Department investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Novaline D. Wilson is prosecuting the case. Calavaza is currently in custody awaiting sentencing and faces five years in prison under the terms of his plea agreement.

Calavaza will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison, a harsh reminder of the severity of his crimes. The community can only hope that justice will be served and that the victim will receive the help and support they deserve.

The guilty plea serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of child sex abuse in our society and the importance of reporting suspicious behavior. If you or someone you know is a victim of child sex abuse, there are resources available to help.

As the investigation and prosecution of this case come to a close, the community can take solace in the fact that Calavaza will be held accountable for his actions. However, the true focus should be on supporting the victim and preventing such heinous crimes from happening in the future.
