Man Jailed for Covering Up Assault

A disturbing case of cover-up and assault has come to an end in South Dakota. Tyler Red Eagle, a 22-year-old from Mission, has been sentenced to 10 months in custody for his role in hiding the assault from law enforcement.

The incident occurred on July 2, 2013, when Red Eagle’s co-defendants broke into the victim’s home and struck them repeatedly with their hands and objects. Red Eagle was present during the assault, but instead of reporting it, he chose to conceal the crime.

Red Eagle was indicted for First Degree Burglary, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury by a federal grand jury on March 11, 2014. He later pled guilty to Misprision of a Felony on May 13, 2014.

The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marie H. Ruettgers and Tim Maher prosecuted the case.

Red Eagle’s sentence also includes 1 year of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of covering up serious crimes. It’s a disturbing trend that our justice system will not tolerate. The victim in this case has suffered greatly, and we hope that this sentence brings them a measure of closure.
