Man Sentenced for Assaulting BIA Officer
A South Dakota man has been punished for putting the lives of law enforcement officials at risk. Dwight Rank, 25, of Fort Thompson, was sentenced to 18 months of probation, with six months of home confinement, $3,000 in fines, and a $25 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred on January 7, 2012, when Rank was driving erratically on a road in the area. A Bureau of Indian Affairs officer noticed Rank crossing the center line and right fog line several times, prompting the officer to activate his emergency lights and siren and attempt to make a traffic stop.
However, Rank led the officer on a high-speed chase before stopping his vehicle in the middle of BIA Road 5. He then accelerated and began driving away, making a U-turn and striking the officer’s vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The investigation into the incident was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case.
Rank was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 13, 2012, and pled guilty to a Superseding Information on January 22, 2013. He was sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 3, 2013.
The case serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officials and the importance of respecting the law and the safety of others.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, highlighting the seriousness of the offense and the need for accountability.
