New Mexico Man Sentenced to 18 Months in Federal Prison for Assaulting Tribal Police Officer
Ricardo Lamagna, a 21-year-old member and resident of Sandia Pueblo, New Mexico, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for assaulting a tribal police officer with a dangerous weapon conviction. Lamagna’s sentence was handed down this afternoon in federal court in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The assault occurred on August 5, 2014, in the early hours of the morning on Sandia Pueblo in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Lamagna’s residence had been the site of a domestic violence call that prompted a response from a tribal police officer with the Pueblo of Sandia Tribal Police Department. Thankfully, the officer was not injured during the assault.
Lamagna was arrested on August 8, 2014, on a criminal complaint charging him with assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon. In the months that followed, Lamagna would enter a guilty plea to a felony information charging him with assault with a deadly weapon. He admitted to assaulting a tribal officer with a handgun on August 5, 2014, in Indian Country, specifically on Sandia Pueblo.
The investigation into Lamagna’s actions was a collaborative effort between the Albuquerque office of the FBI and the Pueblo of Sandia Tribal Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Adams, who worked tirelessly to ensure justice was served.
As Lamagna begins his 18-month sentence, it serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that come with committing violent crimes, especially those that target law enforcement officers. The safety and well-being of our officers are of the utmost importance, and Lamagna’s actions were a clear threat to that.
The conviction and sentencing of Ricardo Lamagna serve as a testament to the dedication and hard work of law enforcement agencies across New Mexico. Their tireless efforts to keep our communities safe will not go unnoticed, and we will continue to shine a light on those who threaten that safety.
