Fatal Stabbing in Rockyford, South Dakota
A shocking act of violence has left one man dead in Rockyford, South Dakota. Lawrence Red Shirt, 28, has been sentenced for the fatal stabbing of his father.
According to prosecutors, Red Shirt used a sharp object to stab his father at least four times in the upper left arm and shoulder area on November 8, 2013. The stab wounds inflicted on the victim were fatal.
Red Shirt was convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter and was sentenced to 72 months in custody, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Lawrence Red Shirt was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case.
Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence on December 17, 2014.
United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing. Johnson’s office will continue to pursue justice for the victims of violent crimes.
