Nigeria Citizen Sentenced for Sex Crime on Wind River Indian Reservation
Aaron David Mbonu, a 36-year-old citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has been sentenced to 51 months of imprisonment for sexual abuse of a minor on the Wind River Indian Reservation. The 51-month sentence was handed down on January 2, 2013, by Chief Federal District Court Judge Nancy D. Freudenthal.
The crime, which occurred between March 6, 2012, and March 16, 2012, involved a victim who was at least 12 years of age but had not yet attained the age of 16 years, and was at least four years younger than the defendant. Mbonu was also ordered to pay a $400.00 fine and a $100.00 special assessment.
U.S. Attorney Christopher A. Crofts announced the sentencing, stating that the defendant’s actions were a serious violation of the trust and vulnerability of the minor victim. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to the charges, the maximum penalty for the crime was 15 years imprisonment, a $250,000.00 fine, supervised release of not less than three years, restitution, and a $100.00 special assessment. However, the court ultimately sentenced Mbonu to 51 months of imprisonment, followed by 10 years of supervised release.
The Wind River Indian Reservation is a sovereign nation located in Wyoming, and the crime occurred on tribal land. The conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, particularly children.
Mbonu’s sentence highlights the severity of the crime and the need for accountability. As the investigation and conviction demonstrate, law enforcement agencies are committed to protecting victims and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
The case is a stark reminder that sexual abuse of minors is a serious crime with severe consequences. As the community comes to terms with the conviction, it is essential to remember the impact of such crimes on victims and their families.
