Man Sentenced to 48 Months for Threatening Congressman

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Scott W. Sulik, 54, of Versailles, Ky., was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for sending a series of threatening emails to a Member of the United States Congress.

According to court documents, Sulik used an email account hosted by Google to send threats to an email address associated with a Member of the United States Congress from September 2017 through December 2017. The threatening emails included statements such as: ‘You put your family at risk . . .’; ‘. . . I’m threatening you.’; ‘What are you going to do before I erase you?’; and ‘Show me anyone who is going to protect you against me . . . .’

Sulik, who pled guilty in June 2018, admitted to one count of cyberstalking. Under federal law, he must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence. Upon his release, he will be under the supervision of the United States Probation Office for three years.

Robert M. Duncan, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Matthew R. Verderosa, Chief of the United States Capitol Police, jointly made the announcement. The investigation was conducted by the United States Capitol Police. The United States was represented by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew T. Boone.

The case serves as a reminder of the seriousness of cyberstalking and the consequences of sending threatening messages online. Sulik’s actions not only put the targeted Congressman at risk but also demonstrated a disturbing disregard for the well-being of others.

As the case comes to a close, it is clear that justice has been served. The 48-month prison sentence is a fitting punishment for Sulik’s crimes, and it serves as a warning to others who may be considering similar actions.

The United States Capitol Police and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky commend the efforts of the investigators and prosecutors who worked tirelessly to bring this case to a successful conclusion.
