Manderson Man Charged in Assault With a Dangerous Weapon
A brutal assault shocked the community of Manderson, South Dakota, when 19-year-old Eric Kills Enemy at Night, a/k/a Eric Kills Enemy, struck a man in the arm and face with a wooden mop handle, breaking the victim’s arm in the process.
The incident occurred in September 2012, leaving the victim seriously injured. Kills Enemy at Night was subsequently arrested and charged with Assault With a Dangerous Weapon.
On December 5, 2012, Kills Enemy at Night pled guilty to the charges, paving the way for his sentencing hearing on March 15, 2013. Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, handed down a sentence of 33 months’ imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release.
Kills Enemy at Night was also ordered to pay $100 to the Victim Assistance Fund, a gesture aimed at compensating the victim for the physical and emotional trauma suffered. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case, bringing Kills Enemy at Night to justice for his heinous crime. The people of Manderson can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that the perpetrator of this violent act will face the consequences of his actions.
The sentence handed down to Kills Enemy at Night serves as a reminder that violence will not be tolerated in our communities. We must continue to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals, and to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
