Andrew J. O’Keefe, Online Threat Against President, MA 2023

BOSTON – In a tense and dramatic turn of events, Andrew J. O’Keefe, 31, from Mansfield, Massachusetts, was handed down a sentence today in U.S. District Court. The court sentenced O’Keefe to time served, amounting to approximately six months, followed by two years of supervised release for his online threat against the President of the United States.

The harrowing incident began on May 13, 2015, when an individual identified as O’Keefe posted a chilling threat on an FBI website, vowing to assassinate President Barack Obama. Two days later, law enforcement officers sought to interview O’Keefe outside his residence but were met with silence. A subsequent search warrant executed at O’Keefe’s home and vehicle uncovered over 100 weapons, including swords, double-edged knives, hatchets, spears, an air gun, and two laptops, leading to his arrest on both state and federal charges.

Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb; Stephen A. Marks, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service; and Mansfield Police Chief Ronald A. Sellon announced the sentencing today. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine is handling the case within Weinreb’s Major Crimes Unit.

O’Keefe’s actions have sent shockwaves through the community, with many questioning how an individual could harbor such violent intentions. His sentence serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences faced by those who make threats against public officials.

As the case comes to a close, it highlights the vigilant work of law enforcement agencies in protecting our nation’s leaders and ensuring the safety of citizens everywhere.
