Christi Rene McPherson, 36, of Many, La., is headed to federal prison for 27 months after being caught with a sawed-off shotgun, grenade simulators, and drugs in a black bag taken during a violent domestic dispute.
McPherson pleaded guilty on July 26, 2016, to one count of unlawful possession of a short-barreled shotgun. U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell handed down the sentence, which also includes three years of supervised release and a $1,000 fine.
The trouble began in 2015 when McPherson fled her boyfriend’s house following a physical altercation, taking with her a black bag packed with illegal firepower. Inside, law enforcement found a 12-gauge shotgun with a barrel under 18 inches—illegal under federal law unless registered—along with five grenade simulators, a Kevlar vest, and additional firearms.
When deputies from the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office tracked her down at a convenience store, they also discovered 3 grams of methamphetamine and 12 pills of Lorazepam in her possession. No registration paperwork was found for the short-barreled shotgun.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David C. Joseph as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Justice Department push to clamp down on illegal gun possession, especially among those barred from owning firearms.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, underscoring the federal and local crackdown on weapons and drug violations in central Louisiana.
