Marble City Man Gets 50 Months for Shooting, Ammo Possession

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Corey Ray Pettit, 31, of Marble City, Oklahoma, will spend the next four years and two months behind bars after being sentenced for illegally possessing ammunition as a convicted felon. The sentence, handed down by Chief Judge Ronald A. White, stems from a shooting incident and subsequent investigation that revealed Pettit’s prior criminal history.

The case originated with a December 14, 2022, incident where Pettit allegedly opened fire on a parked vehicle, striking it twice. Sequoyah County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and recovered spent .25 caliber casings. A subsequent ballistics analysis confirmed a direct match between the casings found at the scene and those recovered during a search of Pettit’s residence – solidifying the link between the suspect and the shooting.

Investigators quickly determined Pettit was no stranger to the law. Records showed he had a prior felony conviction – a crucial detail that classified him as a prohibited person under federal firearm laws. Despite this, Pettit possessed ammunition, leading to the charge of being a felon in possession. This isn’t just about the shooting; it’s about a repeat offender flaunting the law.

On September 14, 2023, Pettit entered a guilty plea to the single count against him. Assistant United States Attorney T. Cameron McEwen prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence gathered by the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The cooperation between these agencies was key to securing the conviction.

Judge White imposed a 50-month (4 years, 2 months) non-paroleable sentence, meaning Pettit will serve the entire term without the possibility of early release. He is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service and will be transferred to a designated facility within the United States Bureau of Prisons to begin serving his sentence.

This case serves as a stark reminder that federal firearm laws carry serious consequences, particularly for those with prior convictions.
