Raleigh, N.C. – In a shocking turn of events, Marcus Alexander Waldo, Jr., 20, has been sentenced to 162 months in prison for three counts of Interference with Commerce by Robbery and Brandishing a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence.
According to court documents, Waldo’s crimes date back to October 22, 2019, when he robbed the Family Fare on U.S. Highway 17 South in Elizabeth City at gunpoint. The young man pointed a firearm at the clerk’s head and demanded money, prompting the clerk to comply and Waldo to flee the scene.
A week later, on October 29, 2019, Waldo struck again, this time targeting the Dollar General on Oak Stump Road in Elizabeth City. He once more pointed a firearm at the store clerk, demanded money, and fled. The third robbery occurred on January 21, 2020, at the same Dollar General location, where Waldo’s modus operandi remained consistent.
Following the third robbery, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Waldo’s residence, where they found clothing, gloves, and a mask that matched the description of the items Waldo wore during the robbery. Officers also discovered a firearm, ammunition, and several stacks of U.S. currency.
U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III presided over the sentencing hearing, where G. Norman Acker, III, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, made the announcement. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Elizabeth City Police Department worked together to investigate the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. Dodson prosecuting the case.
According to court documents, Waldo’s crimes resulted in significant financial losses for the businesses involved. However, the exact dollar amounts were not specified in the source material.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina emphasized the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes. This case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of armed robbery on our communities.
The case is part of a larger effort to combat violent crime in the Eastern District of North Carolina. Related court documents and information can be found on the website of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina or on PACER by searching for Case No. 2:20-CR-29-D.
