A Jackson man is headed to prison for possessing a firearm despite having a prior felony conviction, according to a guilty plea entered in federal court.
Marcus Delars Branson, 27, was found with a firearm by U.S. Probation Officers during a visit to his home, a court document revealed. The officers discovered the firearm at the same time Branson was on supervised release following a prior felony conviction for bank robbery.
On July 25, 2023, a federal grand jury indicted Branson on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a serious crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Branson is scheduled to be sentenced on July 30, 2024, and could face a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, although the final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen prosecuted the case.
U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee and Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced the guilty plea.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve.
