Memphis Man Sentenced for Shooting at Community Center
MEMPHIS, TN – On February 5, 2016, Marcus Dotson, 27, took reckless action at Riverside Community Center in Memphis, Tennessee, putting the lives of children and adults at risk.
According to the investigation, Dotson and his 14-year-old nephew entered the gymnasium in search of a 16-year-old victim. An argument ensued, and Dotson, a convicted felon at the time, brandished a firearm and fired one shot into the ceiling.
The Memphis Police Department’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Unit led the investigation, recovering a Speer .40 caliber shell casing from the gymnasium and obtaining surveillance footage of Dotson fleeing the scene.
Witnesses identified Dotson in a photo lineup, and an arrest warrant was issued. Two weeks later, he was apprehended. The case was prosecuted by Assistants U.S. Attorneys Karen Hartridge and Jerry Kitchen on behalf of the government.
On July 25, 2017, the Honorable Samuel H. Mays sentenced Dotson to 78 months’ confinement and 3 years of supervised release. The federal and state sentences will run concurrently.
Dotson currently faces state criminal charges. The reckless actions of this individual have consequences, and we’re glad to see justice being served.
