ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A devastating car crash has led to a federal indictment and arraignment in the District of New Mexico. Mariah Chapo, a 26-year-old enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, is facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter after a high-speed crash killed an eight-month-old infant.
According to the indictment and records, Chapo was driving at a high rate of speed while intoxicated on February 11, 2022, when her vehicle crashed, ultimately killing the unsecured infant. The alleged homicide occurred within the exterior boundaries of the Navajo Nation.
Chapo was arraigned in federal court on February 23, 2023, and will remain on conditions of release pending trial. An indictment is only an allegation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
If convicted, Chapo faces up to eight years in prison. The investigation into the case was led by the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with assistance from the Navajo Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney Matthew J. McGinley is prosecuting the case. The tragic loss of life in this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of prioritizing road safety.
