Marie Chavez, Narcotics Trafficking, Texas 2009

Lubbock, Texas – Marie Chavez, wife of an alleged leader of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation (ALKQN), was sentenced to 188 months in prison for her role in a large-scale narcotics trafficking conspiracy.

Chavez, 28, pleaded guilty on June 15, 2009, to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and 100 kilograms or more of marijuana.

According to court documents, Chavez and her co-defendants, including her brother-in-law Luis Nava, admitted to participating in a conspiracy that distributed at least five kilograms of cocaine and 100 kilograms of marijuana from 2001 until December 2008.

The conspiracy, which included 17 defendants, involved the acquisition of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico and the transportation of the narcotics to the South Texas region for further distribution.

Aside from Chavez, 13 other defendants have entered guilty pleas, with three sentenced thus far. Five remaining defendants, including Jose Robledo Nava, the alleged ALKQN leader, are pending trial.

The case is being investigated by a multi-agency task force, including the National Gang Targeting, Enforcement and Coordination Center, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the FBI.

Marie Chavez has been in custody since her arrest in December 2008. Her brother-in-law, Luis Nava, re-entered a guilty plea to the superseding indictment and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 2, 2009.
