Marius Lamar Avant, Escape, Iowa 2022

A Davenport man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in escaping from custody. Marius Lamar Avant, 27, was found guilty of Escape from Custody and Felon in Possession of a Firearm in the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois.

Avant’s trouble with the law began in September 2020, when he left the Davenport Residential Reentry Center (RRC) without authorization. He failed to return for over four months, not being apprehended until February 2021. Upon his arrest, Avant was found in possession of a firearm in Rock Island, Illinois.

Avant pleaded guilty to the escape offense on January 10, 2022, following his conviction for the firearm offense in the Central District of Illinois. His sentence includes 16 months in prison, to be served consecutively to his previously imposed 60-month sentence for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. In addition, Avant was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay $100 to the Crime Victims’ fund.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing. The United States Marshals Service investigated the case.

Avant’s escape and subsequent actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and the safety of his community. His sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of such actions.
