Davenport’s streets have seen their fair share of crime, but one brazen escape has caught the attention of authorities. Marius Lamar Avant, 27, has been sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for his role in escaping from the Davenport Residential Reentry Center in September 2020.
According to the investigation, Avant left the facility without authorization and failed to return for over four months. When he was finally apprehended in February 2021, he was found in possession of a firearm in Rock Island, Illinois.
Avant’s troubles didn’t end there. He had already been serving a term of imprisonment for a prior federal escape conviction and was still on his sentence when he committed this latest offense.
Not only did Avant receive a 16-month sentence for his escape, but he was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay $100 to the Crime Victims’ fund. This is in addition to his previous 60-month sentence for Felon in Possession of a Firearm in the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement, praising the efforts of the United States Marshals Service in investigating the case.
Avant’s guilty plea came on January 10, 2022, after he was convicted of the firearm offense in the Central District of Illinois. His sentence is a reminder that crime doesn’t pay, and those who break the law will face the consequences.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of recidivism and the importance of rehabilitation in the justice system. As Avant begins his sentence, the people of Davenport can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served.
