Defendant Faces Justice for Felony Gun Offense

Sioux City, IA – Joel Dawdy, 31, has been sentenced to over 5 years in federal prison for his involvement in a felony gun offense. Dawdy was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm after a guilty plea on December 21, 2020.

According to evidence presented during his sentencing hearings, Dawdy was involved in a high-speed pursuit with law enforcement on January 28, 2020. During the chase, Dawdy jettisoned a loaded gun, which was later recovered by authorities. Dawdy’s actions led to a series of charges, including violating the conditions of his supervised release and absconding from supervision.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through community partnerships and targeted enforcement efforts. PSN brings together a broad spectrum of stakeholders to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in the community.

The case was investigated by the Sioux City, Iowa Police Department, the United States Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case.

Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand of the United States District Court in Sioux City handed down the sentence, ordering Dawdy to serve 63 months in federal prison, followed by a 3-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

Dawdy is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison to begin serving his sentence.
