Mark Karas, 52, Sentenced to 30 Months Imprisonment for Oxycodone Conspiracy in Vermont

Mark Karas, 52, of Tucson, Arizona, has been sentenced to 30 months of imprisonment for his role in a massive oxycodone conspiracy in Vermont. The sentencing comes after Karas pleaded guilty to the charge in a federal court.

Karas was arrested last April and has been incarcerated since then. The case against him was investigated by the Milton Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

According to court records, a federal grand jury in Burlington indicted Karas and Mark Turner, 28, of Fairfax, for conspiring to distribute oxycodone in March 2012. Milton Police Officers made several controlled purchases of oxycodone from Turner in the winter of 2012.

After Turner’s guilty plea in 2013, he was sentenced to time served. However, Karas was not arrested until last spring, following a traffic stop in Missouri.

U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions III also ordered that Karas serve three years of supervised release following the completion of his prison term.

Karas is represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven Barth, while Turner was represented by Chris Davis. The prosecutor in the case is Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Waples.

The case is a significant blow to the oxycodone trafficking ring that operated in the state. The Milton Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are to be commended for their tireless efforts in bringing Karas to justice.
