Markley Admits Threatening Postal Inspector, Possessing Child Porn

PITTSBURGH, Pa – A Westmoreland County man is facing a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to a chilling double-crime: threatening to murder a federal agent and possessing horrific child pornography. Todd Markley, 49, entered guilty pleas in federal court today, bringing a disturbing case closer to resolution.

According to United States Attorney David J. Hickton, Markley pleaded guilty to two serious counts before United States District Judge David S. Cercone. The charges? Threatening to murder, intimidate, interfere with, or retaliate against a Federal Official – specifically, a United States Postal Inspector with the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) – and possession of material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor.

Court documents reveal the depth of Markley’s depravity. On or about May 31, 2012, he allegedly made direct threats against the Postal Inspector, intending to obstruct her official duties. The motivation remains unclear, but the intent was brutally clear: to silence and harm a federal law enforcement officer. Simultaneously, on or about April 12, 2012, Markley was found to be in possession of graphic images and computer files depicting the sexual abuse of children.

This wasn’t a fleeting lapse in judgment. The evidence points to a deliberate and disturbing pattern of behavior. Investigators with the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the USPIS painstakingly built the case against Markley, uncovering the digital evidence and linking it back to the threats against the Postal Inspector. The connection between the two crimes remains under investigation, but the sheer volume of depravity is enough to send chills down the spine.

Judge Cercone has scheduled sentencing for June 18, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. Markley could face a total of 20 years in prison, a hefty $500,000 fine, or a combination of both. However, the final sentence will be determined by the seriousness of the offenses and any prior criminal history. Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar is leading the prosecution, determined to ensure justice is served.

This case serves as a grim reminder of the darkness that exists, even within our communities. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing, holding those who prey on the innocent and threaten those who protect us accountable for their actions. The victims, especially the children exploited in the images Markley possessed, deserve justice and a future free from abuse.
