Former Prison Official Pleads Guilty to Taking Bribes from Inmate

A shocking case of corruption has surfaced in Virginia, where a former prison official has pleaded guilty to taking bribes from an inmate with whom he had a sexual relationship.

Marlon R. Jones, Jr., 44, of Portsmouth, was the Assistant Director of James River Residential Reentry Facility (James River RRC) when he engaged in the illicit activities. Between April 2021 and September 2022, Jones had a direct relationship with L.C., an inmate who was released to home confinement in January 2021, that quickly exceeded appropriate boundaries.

According to court documents, Jones had sexual contact and exchanged sexual messages with L.C. via telephone and text. In exchange for assistance with making violations disappear, L.C. paid Jones on several occasions. This was discovered when another supervisor took over James River RRC and found that L.C. had had at least fourteen incidents, only three of which had been properly recorded.

Jones engaged in hundreds of exchanges with L.C., including messages that revealed that Jones both had sexual contact with L.C. and that L.C. paid Jones in exchange for helping L.C. avoid disciplinary consequences for violations. Jones received physical currency and electronic transfers from L.C. through his CashApp account. Between September 24, 2021, and March 29, 2022, L.C. paid Jones a total of $650 over five CashApp transactions.

L.C. also referred other individuals to Jones, including his cousin. Jones’s actions have left many questioning the integrity of the prison system and the need for stricter measures to prevent such corruption.

Jones is scheduled to be sentenced on August 7 and faces up to 15 years in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency within the prison system. The public expects correctional officials to uphold the law and maintain a safe and secure environment for both inmates and staff. Jones’s actions fell woefully short of these expectations, and he will now face the consequences of his actions.

This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
