Tampa Man Faces Life Sentence for Possessing Firearm and Ammunition as Convicted Felon
Martez Manning, a 26-year-old from St. Petersburg, has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm and ammunition, charges that could land him a life sentence in federal prison. According to court documents, Manning was found in possession of a Beretta model 21A Bobcat semiautomatic pistol and two rounds of CCI 22 long rifle ammunition on January 2, 2023.
Manning’s guilty plea comes on the heels of seven previous felony convictions, including possession of cocaine, tampering with physical evidence, and five convictions for sale or delivery of cocaine. As a convicted felon, Manning is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the St. Petersburg Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Samantha Newman is handling the prosecution, while Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Nebesky is overseeing the forfeiture aspect of the case.
Manning’s case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in neighborhoods across the country. Launched on May 26, 2021, PSN brings together law enforcement and community organizations to foster trust, support prevention efforts, and set strategic enforcement priorities.
Under federal law, Manning faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison, with a maximum sentence of life. No sentencing date has been set at this time. Manning’s history of felony convictions and his possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon has raised concerns about public safety and the need for effective crime prevention strategies.
The case highlights the importance of Project Safe Neighborhoods in addressing violent crime and gun violence in communities. By bringing together law enforcement and community organizations, PSN aims to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
