EL PASO, Texas – Mark Martinez, 57, of Anthony, Texas, will spend the rest of his life in federal prison after being sentenced today for a horrifying array of crimes: producing, possessing, and distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM), violating the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), and committing a sex offense while already a registered sex offender. The sentence – life plus 10 years – was handed down in federal court, finally locking away a predator with a disturbing history.
Court documents reveal Martinez wasn’t a first-time offender. He was previously convicted in 1991 for aggravated sexual assault of a prepubescent child, around the age of eight. In 2022, he was already in violation of SORNA, failing to maintain contact with his registration officer and residing at an unknown address. This wasn’t a lapse in paperwork; it was a calculated attempt to disappear and continue his depraved activities.
The FBI cracked the case in August 2022, executing a search warrant that unearthed a digital cesspool of abuse. Multiple electronic devices seized from Martinez’s residence contained thousands of CSAM images and videos. Disturbingly, some photos depicted a young girl, approximately five to six years old, taken at his home in July. Other devices revealed a folder of videos downloaded from WhatsApp featuring another minor. Even more damning were chats recovered from Telegram, where Martinez openly admitted to sexually molesting a minor. Agents discovered a staggering 2,391 CSAM images and 138 CSAM videos on one device alone, many depicting children before puberty. His cellphone held an additional 50 images.
Facing a criminal complaint and arrest warrant issued in October 2022, Martinez fled to Mexico, brazenly disregarding his legal obligations. He was eventually apprehended at the Columbus Port of Entry in New Mexico on March 3, 2023, while attempting to re-enter the United States. A federal grand jury indicted him on March 22, 2023, and he pleaded guilty to all five counts on August 21, 2024. His attempt to evade justice failed, and today, he faced the consequences.
“Placing this child predator behind bars for the rest of his life makes certain this predator will never again harm another child,” stated U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas. The sentiment was echoed by FBI El Paso Special Agent in Charge John Morales, who emphasized the gravity of the situation: “Martinez is a dangerous sexual predator who preyed on our community’s most vulnerable victims – our children…This case highlights the disturbing reality of sexual exploitation, and the sentence ensures this predator will remain behind bars and unable to continue such atrocities physically and on the web.”
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah Valenzuela and Lori Hughes secured the conviction. This case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation and abuse.
