A 20-year-old Dayton man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a brazen daylight robbery of a mail carrier at gunpoint.
Marvin Brown, Jr., of Dayton, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 120 months in prison for assault on a postal carrier and using a firearm during a crime of violence, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio.
The crime took place in December 2023, when Brown and a co-defendant drove around a Dayton neighborhood looking for a mail carrier to rob. On December 18, 2023, they found a postal worker, and Brown approached the victim and brandished a handgun at him, demanding his mail bag.
Brown discharged the firearm at least twice into the victim’s postal vehicle, and he and the co-defendant sped away with the mail bag and mail contained within it.
Brown was charged federally in January 2024 and pleaded guilty in June 2024. He will serve his sentence in a federal prison.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent G. Tabacchi represented the government in the case.
The sentence was imposed by Senior U.S. District Court Judge Walter H. Rice. U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker for the Southern District of Ohio and Lesley Allison, Inspector in Charge of the USPIS, praised the work of law enforcement in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our nation’s postal workers, who play a critical role in delivering essential services to our communities.
