A brazen string of convenience store robberies and a brazen bank heist have landed a Maryland man a 60-year prison sentence.
Andrew Philip Derr, 22, of Fredrick, Maryland was convicted of two convenience store robberies and money laundering in federal court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Derr, who was previously convicted for robbing the Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust branch on Council Street in Cedar Rapids on January 3, 2024, admitted to carrying out the heists after being discharged from the military in 2023.
According to court documents, Derr robbed the Casey’s General Store in Robins, Iowa, on December 27, 2023, making off with over $7,000 in cash. He struck again on January 1, 2024, robbing the Kum & Go store on Four Oaks Drive in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, netting over $16,000 in cash.
Derr, however, wasn’t content to simply keep the loot; he laundered the stolen funds by making multiple deposits into his Maryland Bank account to disguise the nature, source of ownership of the funds. The United States Marshals Service eventually tracked Derr down to his Iowa City, Iowa, apartment, where they found a taunting note reading, “Catch me if you can.”
Derr turned himself in to the Orleans Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff’s Office on January 12, 2024. Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Derr faces a possible maximum sentence of 60 years’ imprisonment, a $1,000,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the United States Marshals Service’s Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force, the Cedar Rapids Police Department, Robins Police Department, Linn County Attorney’s Office, the University of Iowa Police Department and the Orleans Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff’s Office.
