GLEN BURNIE, MD – Jermel Henderson, 38, of Gwynn Oak, Maryland, is headed back to federal prison after receiving a nine-year sentence for the October 11, 2013, robbery of a TD Bank located at 7926 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie. Chief U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake also ordered Henderson to pay $1,766 in restitution, a pittance considering the fear he inflicted.
The sentencing announcement came from a coalition of law enforcement officials, including United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein, FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen E. Vogt, Anne Arundel County Police Chief Tim Altomare, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts, and Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Wes Adams. A lot of brass for one bank job, but Henderson’s history made it a priority.
According to the plea agreement, Henderson strolled into the Glen Burnie TD Bank and calmly demanded cash from a teller. He made off with $1,971 before escalating the situation, ordering all bank employees to hit the floor. As he fled, a dye pack hidden amongst the stolen bills exploded, scattering cash – $205 was recovered – and likely ruining his getaway. A rookie mistake, but it wasn’t enough to save him.
Detectives with the Anne Arundel County Police Department quickly zeroed in on Henderson. He was the fifth customer to enter the bank that day, and the previous night’s cleaning hadn’t erased everything. Surveillance footage showed Henderson brazenly placing his bare left hand on the counter while making his demands. It had been raining, and a latent palm print, lifted by a crime scene technician, proved to be the crucial piece of evidence. The teller positively identified Henderson from a photo lineup.
Baltimore City Police officers picked up Henderson on November 8, 2013, for an unrelated incident. Faced with the mounting evidence, Henderson reportedly confessed, telling detectives, “I’m guilty no matter what I tell you.” He also admitted to a prior bank robbery conviction in Baltimore, for which Judge Blake had already handed down a 70-month sentence back in 1996. Apparently, Henderson hadn’t learned his lesson the first time.
United States Attorney Rosenstein offered praise for the collaborative effort of the FBI, Anne Arundel County and Baltimore Police Departments, and the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office. Prosecutor Ayn B. Ducao is also credited with securing the conviction. Nine years isn’t a long time, but it’s a start. Henderson’s pattern of behavior suggests he’ll be a name we see again, eventually.
