CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – A sickening case of child exploitation culminated today as Micheal Jones, 40, of Mason City, Iowa, admitted in federal court to producing and possessing horrific material. Jones pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a child and one count of possession of child pornography, bringing a dark chapter closer to a just end.
According to court documents, the depravity began in April 2013. Jones admitted to sexually exploiting a child, going so far as to create sexually explicit depictions of the victim. The abuse didn’t stop there; between April 2013 and September 2014, Jones continued his criminal behavior by hoarding child pornography, further victimizing innocent children.
The investigation, led by the Mason City Police Department, uncovered the extent of Jones’s twisted obsession. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel will now prepare a presentence report, outlining the full scope of the damage and recommending a suitable punishment. Jones remains in the custody of the United States Marshal, awaiting his fate.
Facing a mandatory minimum of 15 years behind bars, Jones could receive up to 40 years in prison. Beyond imprisonment, he is also looking at a potential $500,000 fine, a $200 special assessment, and a lifetime of supervised release following his incarceration. This isn’t just about punishment; it’s about protecting vulnerable children from predators like Jones.
This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice.
