Masters Merchandise Thief Pleads Guilty to $5.3M Heist

CHICAGO — In a brazen scheme that netted him millions, Richard Brendan Globensky, 39, of Augusta, Ga., pleaded guilty in federal court in Chicago to stealing Masters golf tournament merchandise and memorabilia worth $5.3 million.

Globensky, a former warehouse assistant at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, repeatedly stole merchandise and memorabilia from 2009 to 2022. The haul included Masters shirts, hats, flags, watches, and other goods, as well as historically significant items like the Green Jackets won by Arnold Palmer, Gene Sarazen, and Ben Hogan.

The stolen merchandise was sold to an online broker in Florida for approximately $5.3 million, while the memorabilia was sold to the same broker and an associate for nearly $300,000. The brokers later re-sold the stolen items at significant markups, netting them substantial profits. At least one of the stolen items was purchased by a collector in Chicago.

Globensky’s guilty plea was announced by Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Robert W. ‘Wes’ Wheeler, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI. The FBI’s Art Crime Team provided valuable assistance in the case.

According to the plea agreement, Globensky faces up to 10 years in federal prison for transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce. U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman set sentencing for October 29, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.

The case is a stark reminder of the vast scope of white-collar crime and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and communities. As Grimy Times continues to investigate and expose these crimes, we will bring you updates on this and other cases.
