Matthew Byrd, Armed Robberies, Mississippi 2023

MERIDIAN, MS – Matthew Byrd, 42, of Meridian, Mississippi, has confessed to a string of brazen armed robberies that terrorized local businesses across the state last spring. Byrd pled guilty to three counts of robbery and two counts of brandishing a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to federal prosecutors.

Between April 20, 2022, and May 15, 2022, Byrd allegedly targeted four businesses, flashing a firearm at clerks and making off with both merchandise and cash. Court documents reveal a pattern of intimidation, with Byrd using the weapon to control victims during each heist. The full extent of the stolen property hasn’t been disclosed, but local business owners are reportedly relieved the ordeal is nearing its end.

What makes this case particularly damning is Byrd’s prior criminal record. The 42-year-old is a convicted felon, previously serving time for Possession of Methamphetamine and Residential Burglary. Federal law strictly prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms, adding another layer of severity to the charges. The ATF took the lead on investigating this case, working in conjunction with multiple local agencies.

The collaborative investigation involved the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department, East Mississippi Drug Task Force, Meridian Police Department, Clinton Police Department, Newton County Sheriff’s Department, and the ATF. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam T. Stuart is handling the prosecution, signaling the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating these crimes.

U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee and ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson jointly announced the guilty plea. Byrd is scheduled to be sentenced on February 13, 2024. He’s staring down the barrel of a potential life sentence, though the final decision will rest with a federal district judge, who will consider sentencing guidelines and other legal factors.

This prosecution is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, a nationwide initiative focused on reducing violent crime. PSN brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement to target the most dangerous offenders and implement long-term solutions to curb violence. The program, officials say, is designed to deliver lasting results for communities plagued by crime and ensure accountability for those who prey on the innocent.
