A brazen armed robbery in Ossining, New York, turned deadly in December 2020, resulting in the death of one of the perpetrators. The incident has now led to federal charges against two suspects, Matthew Dusablon, 27, and Jahaira Mejia, 35, both of the Bronx.
According to the indictment unsealed yesterday, Dusablon and Mejia allegedly participated in a gunpoint robbery on December 6, 2020, during which one of their co-conspirators brandished a firearm. Unfortunately, that individual succumbed to their injuries sustained during the robbery victim’s flight from the scene.
Further investigation revealed that Dusablon and Mejia attempted to cover their tracks by concealing a jacket worn by another co-conspirator during the robbery and deleting information from their cell phones and social media accounts. Dusablon also directed a co-conspirator to erase information from their cellphone and social media accounts in an effort to obstruct the federal investigation.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams praised the outstanding investigative work of the Ossining Police Department and the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, which comprises Special Agents and Task Force Officers from various local and federal agencies.
The defendants are each charged with Hobbs Act robbery conspiracy, Hobbs Act robbery, a related firearms offense, and obstruction of justice. If convicted, they face a maximum term of 20 years in prison for Counts One, Two, and Four, while Count Three carries a maximum term of life in prison and a mandatory minimum term of seven years in prison that must run consecutive to any other term of imprisonment imposed.
Dusablon and Mejia were arrested yesterday and presented before United States Magistrate Judge Judith C. McCarthy in White Plains federal court. The case is a stark reminder that attempting to cover up one’s crimes only leads to more criminal charges.
In a statement, Ossining Police Chief Kevin Sylvester expressed relief that the community can now rest assured that the perpetrators have been brought to justice. The case is a testament to the seamless collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
