A 32-year-old Kyle man is facing federal charges after being indicted for felony child abuse and neglect. Matthew Harold Iron, Sr. was named in a grand jury indictment on December 20, 2016, marking a grim escalation in a case involving the endangerment of a child under the age of 7.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Dakota confirmed the charges, which stem from Iron’s alleged actions of exposing the young child to an environment of mistreatment near Kyle. Authorities say he also threatened the child with substantial harm, triggering the federal investigation and subsequent indictment.
Iron appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on December 29, 2016, where he entered a plea of not guilty. Despite his plea, the charges carry severe penalties: up to 15 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The court may also order restitution.
The case is being investigated by a joint task force comprising the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Their collaboration underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the jurisdictional complexities involved in federal crimes committed on tribal lands.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Patterson is leading the prosecution. Federal records indicate that Iron was taken into custody and remains detained pending trial. No trial date has been scheduled as of this report.
The indictment is an accusation, and Matthew Harold Iron, Sr. is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor this case as developments unfold in the federal docket.
