Local Man Sentenced for Assaulting Federal Officer

A Parmelee, South Dakota resident, Matthew M. Horned Eagle, Jr., has been sentenced for his role in the assault of a federal law enforcement officer in Todd County, South Dakota.

According to reports, the incident took place on April 13, 2020, when Horned Eagle forcibly assaulted a law enforcement officer employed by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The assault involved knocking a body camera off the officer’s vest during a physical struggle and later spitting on another officer.

Matthew M. Horned Eagle, Jr., age 31, was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 12, 2021, and pleaded guilty on July 15, 2021.

The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case. On October 4, 2021, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence.

Horned Eagle was sentenced to time served through October 21, 2021, to equal 12 months in federal custody, three years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100. Following his release from federal custody, Horned Eagle was immediately released.

The incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, the federal agency responsible for investigating the incident, has stated that they take all allegations of violence against their officers seriously.
