Matthew Sabir Sentenced to 20 Years for Armed Robberies, St. Louis MO, 2022

A 20-year prison sentence was handed down to Matthew Sabir, a 38-year-old man from Wentzville, Missouri, for a string of armed robberies in St. Louis County.

The crimes took place at a White Castle restaurant and a BP gas station in the summer of 2022. On June 22, 2022, Sabir demanded "all the $20 and $50 bills" from an employee at the White Castle restaurant at 7380 Olive Boulevard in University City before placing a black semi-automatic pistol on the countertop.

A day later, Sabir returned to the White Castle restaurant, where he attempted to rob the employees again. He pointed a pistol at them and ordered them to hand over money, but the employees ran. Sabir then opened fire, hitting a 16-year-old female employee multiple times.

The victim, who survived the shooting, spoke at Sabir’s sentencing hearing, describing the ongoing physical and emotional trauma she continues to endure. Sabir pleaded guilty to three felonies: robbery, brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

The case was investigated by the University City Police Department, the Berkeley Police Department, and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Linda Lane prosecuted the case. The firearm charges carry a mandatory minimum prison term, consecutive to any other charge.

The 20-year prison sentence is a fitting punishment for Sabir’s brazen crimes, which put the lives of several innocent people at risk. His actions serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of armed robbery and the importance of prioritizing public safety.
