BILLINGS, MT – A wave of federal drug and weapons charges hit Montana courts this week, revealing the continued flow of narcotics and illicit firearms across state lines. Authorities are cracking down on individuals allegedly involved in large-scale drug distribution networks, with penalties potentially reaching life in prison. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana announced the arraignments Friday, detailing charges ranging from meth conspiracy to fentanyl trafficking and illegal firearm possession.
Matthew Raymond Schroeder, 47, of Lakewood, Colorado, appeared in Billings on March 14th, facing charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute meth. If convicted of the most serious crime, Schroeder faces a mandatory minimum 10 years to life in prison, a $10 million fine, and at least five years of supervised release. He was remanded to custody pending further proceedings. The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Billings Police Department, and Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office.
Elsewhere, three transients – Keegan Tait Roll, 28, Camille Ann Rounds, 46, and Deborah Lynn Renenger, 32 – appeared on March 13th, all charged with possession to distribute controlled substances. Similar to Schroeder, conviction on the most severe charge could land them a mandatory minimum of 10 years to life, a $10 million fine, and five years of supervised release. All three were also remanded. The Eastern Montana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations led the investigation.
In Great Falls, Kayla Denise Smith, 25, of Great Falls, pleaded not guilty on March 13th to charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances, possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, and distribution of meth. She faces a potential sentence of 10 years to life, a $10 million fine, and at least five years of supervised release. Simultaneously, Ryan Mark Jensen, 43, of Bremerton, Washington, was arraigned on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, carrying a potential sentence of five to 40 years, a $5 million fine, and four years of supervised release. Both Smith and Jensen were detained pending further proceedings, with the Great Falls Police Department, DEA, and Montana Division of Criminal Investigation handling the investigations.
The net tightened further with the arrest of Ryan Creighton Doak, 48, of Everett, Washington, in Missoula. Doak faces a trifecta of charges: possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. The potential penalties are steep: 10 years to life on the drug charge, and five years to life, consecutive to any other sentence, plus a $250,000 fine and five years of supervised release for the firearm offenses. Doak was also detained. Investigators on the case included the Missoula High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Montana Highway Patrol.
These cases, documented under PACER references 22-150, 23-41, 22-102, 23-22 and 23-16, underscore the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and related crimes in Montana. U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich’s office reminds the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the severity of the potential sentences highlights the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating these offenses. Grimy Times will continue to follow these cases as they progress through the legal system.
