A Peoria man has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation. Matthew T. Cosey, 32, was convicted of two counts of distribution of methamphetamine and received concurrent sentences on each count.
The evidence presented in court showed that Cosey delivered methamphetamine on two occasions in January 2023 in Tazewell County, Illinois. Law enforcement arrested Cosey after the second sale, seizing a total of 167.2 grams of methamphetamine.
Cosey pleaded guilty to the charges in January 2026, just months before he was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jonathan E. Hawley. The statutory penalties for distribution of methamphetamine include up to 20 years’ imprisonment, up to a three-year term of supervised release, and up to a $1,000,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Springfield, Illinois, Resident Office, the Illinois State Police Central Illinois Enforcement Group, the Illinois State Police Silver SWAT team, the Illinois State Police Peoria Metropolitan Enforcement Group, and the Peoria Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa P. Ortiz represented the government in the prosecution. Ortiz’s hard work and dedication to bringing Cosey to justice were instrumental in securing the conviction.
Cosey’s sentence is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trafficking operation in the Peoria area. The investigation and prosecution of this case are a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement to combat the scourge of drug trafficking in our communities.
The case is a reminder that the consequences of engaging in methamphetamine trafficking are severe and can result in significant prison time and financial penalties.
