Defendant Faces Justice for Assault

A Shiprock man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a brutal assault that left multiple victims with serious bodily injuries.

Matthew Yazzie, 27, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced to 78 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his conviction on assault charges.

The crime took place on June 13, 2015, in Indian Country in San Juan County, N.M., when Yazzie allegedly assaulted two women and a man. The victims suffered serious bodily injuries as a result of the assaults.

According to the indictment, Yazzie was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the assault. He was arrested on Sept. 21, 2015, and charged with federal assault charges.

Yazzie pled guilty to the indictment without the benefit of a plea agreement on March 4, 2016. He is currently serving his prison sentence.

The case was investigated by the Farmington office of the FBI, the New Mexico State Police, and the Shiprock office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elaine Y. Ramirez prosecuted the case.
