RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina has seen another major blow to the world of illicit narcotics. Maurice Dwight Toxey, a 37-year-old man from Elizabeth City, was sentenced to 144 months in prison for distributing cocaine, cocaine base (crack), and fentanyl.
The conviction comes after Toxey pled guilty on June 23, 2021, to charges related to his involvement in the distribution of narcotics in the communities surrounding Elizabeth City and the Outer Banks. According to court documents, Toxey was involved in the distribution of multiple controlled substances including cocaine, crack, methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl.
The investigation, which involved multiple law enforcement agencies, found that Toxey conducted controlled purchases of drugs from him, including some deals while he was on state probation. This is not the first time Toxey has been involved in crimes related to narcotics.
Toxey has a history of being convicted of crimes involving the distribution or possession with the intent to sell or deliver controlled substances. This latest conviction has brought an end to his reign of distributing narcotics in the area.
The announcement was made by Michael Easley, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina after sentencing by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Marshals Service, Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Dare County Narcotics Task Force, Elizabeth City Police Department, and Kitty Hawk Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Nick J. Miller prosecuting the case.
The case against Toxey can be found on the website of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina or on PACER by searching for Case No. 2:21-CR-10-D.
