Joshua Maxwell, Carjacking, Florida 2016

DAVIE, FL – A brazen act of violence at a South Florida CarMax dealership has landed Joshua Maxwell, 28, of Fort Lauderdale, a nine-year federal prison sentence. Maxwell was sentenced yesterday by United States District Judge William Zloch for the brutal carjacking of a CarMax employee on November 11, 2016.

According to court records, Maxwell posed as a potential buyer, expressing interest in a 2012 Dodge Charger. After providing a driver’s license for a test drive, a routine check revealed Maxwell had visited the same Davie location just one day prior, raising immediate red flags. The salesman, unsuspecting of the danger to come, accompanied Maxwell on the test drive.

As the test drive neared its end, the salesman asked Maxwell to pull over so they could switch seats and return to the lot. That’s when Maxwell unleashed a savage attack, repeatedly striking the salesman in the head with a concealed copper pipe. The victim attempted to escape, but Maxwell continued the assault, ultimately stabbing him in the chest before fleeing in the stolen Dodge Charger. The injured salesman was left bleeding in the roadway and rushed to a trauma center with serious injuries.

Federal authorities, led by Acting United States Attorney Benjamin G. Greenberg, and a multi-agency task force including the FBI, Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), Davie Police Department, and Plantation Police Department, quickly apprehended Maxwell. He confessed to the carjacking, leaving no doubt about his guilt. Maxwell previously pled guilty to one count of carjacking, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2119(1).

“This wasn’t just a car theft; it was a calculated, brutal attack on a working man,” said a source close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Maxwell’s actions were predatory and demonstrated a complete disregard for human life. The 108-month sentence sends a clear message that such violence will not be tolerated.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jodi L. Anton prosecuted the case. Details about the case can be found on the District Court for the Southern District of Florida website at www.flsd.uscourts.gov or through PACER at http://pacer.flsd.uscourts.gov. Greenberg specifically commended the collaborative investigative work of the involved agencies, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation in bringing violent criminals to justice.
