McGregor W. Scott, U.S. Senate Confirmation, California 2018

The United States Senate has confirmed McGregor W. Scott as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California. Scott was nominated by President Donald J. Trump and was sworn in on December 29, 2017.

Scott, a seasoned attorney, had previously held the position of U.S. Attorney from 2003 to 2009. He was appointed by President George W. Bush and will now resume his duties after a brief hiatus.

The Eastern District of California, which Scott will oversee, covers 34 counties in the Central Valley and the Sierras. The office, with 92 attorneys and 81 non-attorney staff, has offices in Sacramento, Fresno, and Bakersfield.

Scott expressed his gratitude and humility upon his appointment, stating, ‘I am humbled and honored to be appointed by the president to lead the committed men and women in this outstanding office. I look forward to working with them and our law enforcement partners to keep our communities safe, to safeguard the Treasury, and to provide the United States with the highest quality legal representation in all the matters we handle.’

Scott’s qualifications include a B.A. from Santa Clara University in 1985 and a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law, University of California, in 1989. He has served as a deputy district attorney from 1989 to 1997 in Contra Costa County, California, and as the elected District Attorney of Shasta County, California, from 1997 to 2003.

In addition to his law enforcement experience, Scott has also practiced as a partner with the law firm of Orrick, Herrington, & Sutcliffe LLP, focusing on white collar criminal defense and corporate investigations. He retired in 2008 from the U.S. Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel after 23 years of service.

The U.S. Attorney serves as the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Eastern District of California, responsible for prosecuting federal criminal cases and representing the United States in civil litigation.
