McGrigg’s CDL Scam
A Jackson man has admitted to selling fake commercial driver’s licenses, putting the lives of countless motorists at risk.
Bennjamin James McGrigg, 43, of Jackson, pleaded guilty to commercial driver’s license fraud in federal court on Tuesday. According to investigators, McGrigg worked for a company that provided training and certification to individuals seeking commercial driver’s licenses.
However, McGrigg’s employment only authorized certification to those who were students of the company. He allegedly provided paperwork to non-students, claiming they had passed the road skills test when, in fact, they had not.
The fake paperwork was then submitted to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety by individuals seeking to obtain a commercial driver’s license. An investigation revealed that some of the applicants could not have achieved the results on the paperwork, leading authorities to suspect widespread fraud.
McGrigg faces a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. He is set to be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III on November 16, 2018, at 9:15 a.m.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Department of Transportation-Office of Inspector General, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Erin Chalk is prosecuting the case.
U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst praised the investigators for their work in uncovering the scam, saying that it demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting the public from unsafe drivers.
