McLaughlin Man Indicted for Assaulting Cop

A McLaughlin, South Dakota, man has been charged with a federal crime after allegedly assaulting a Corson County Deputy Sheriff, leaving the officer with serious bodily injury.

Brett Claymore, 21, was indicted on June 17, 2014, by a federal grand jury on charges of Aggravated Assault Against a Law Enforcement Officer and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

According to the indictment, the assault occurred on June 15, 2014. Claymore appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on June 24, 2014, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.

Claymore faces a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and up to $200 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Law Enforcement Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case. Claymore was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
