McLaughlin Man Sentenced for Assault

A McLaughlin, South Dakota, man was sentenced for assaulting a federal officer. Jorge Trujillo, age 22, was sentenced to 21 months in custody, to be followed by 2 years of supervised release.

The incident occurred on August 5, 2014, at McLaughlin, when law enforcement officers responded to a call regarding a man with a knife making threats. Trujillo resisted arrest by attempting to reach for a fixed-blade kitchen knife located in the waistband of his pants.

Upon seeing the knife, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) law enforcement officer making the arrest immediately took the knife away from Trujillo. Trujillo was indicted for Assaulting, Resisting and Impeding a Federal Officer by a federal grand jury on August 19, 2014. He pled guilty on January 29, 2015.

This case was investigated by BIA Law Enforcement Services and the Corson County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper prosecuted the case. Trujillo was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence on April 20, 2015. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.

The sentence was met with minimal reaction from the community, with many residents expressing concern for the officer’s safety. The incident has sparked a renewed focus on officer safety and de-escalation techniques.
