Md. Woman Pleads Guilty to Govt. Money Theft

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a stunning betrayal of public trust, Tashawn Spencer, a Maryland native, has pleaded guilty to the theft of government monies, a crime that could land her behind bars for up to a decade.

According to court documents, Spencer, a former employee of the United States Department of Treasury Bureau of Fiscal Service in Parkersburg, admitted to misusing government-issued purchase cards. She is accused of siphoning off over $1,000 from public coffers and appropriating it for her personal gain.

The plea comes as federal investigators uncover a trail of financial misconduct that has stunned the justice community. Spencer’s case serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks posed by those entrusted with handling government funds.

United States Attorney William S. Thompson announced the charges, commending the diligent investigative work of the U.S. Department of Treasury-Office of Inspector General (OIG). The OIG has been instrumental in bringing such cases to light and ensuring accountability for public servants who abuse their positions of trust.

The hearing was presided over by United States District Judge Irene C. Berger, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen Robeson leading the prosecution. Spencer is scheduled to be sentenced on March 24, 2022.
