Hermosa Woman Sentenced to Eight Years on Gun and Drug Charges
In a recent case, Megan Smith, a 39-year-old woman from Hermosa, South Dakota, was sentenced to eight years in federal prison for gun and drug charges. On August 30, 2021, Judge Karen E. Schreier, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence.
Megan Smith Receives Eight-Year Sentence
Smith was found guilty of one count of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The charges stem from a March 2020 incident in Rapid City, South Dakota, where Smith was found in possession of multiple firearms, some of which were stolen, and a sawed-off shotgun. Additionally, law enforcement discovered methamphetamine and evidence of large-scale methamphetamine distribution in the area.
The investigation, which was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, revealed that Smith was an unlawful user of a controlled substance. She was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 11, 2020, and pleaded guilty on May 7, 2021.
As part of her sentence, Smith was also ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. She was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, a program aimed at reducing violent crime through a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations.
The sentence handed down to Smith serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of engaging in gun and drug-related crimes. Law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to combat these issues and keep communities safe.
