Bookkeeper Guilty of Wire Fraud in Elk County

A devastating case of corporate theft has come to light in Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, where a local bookkeeper has been found guilty of embezzling over $765,000 from her employer.

Melissa Bittler, 41, pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud in federal court, according to Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman.

In a shocking revelation, the court was advised that Bittler, who served as the office manager and bookkeeper at a construction company in Johnsonburg, used the embezzled company money to buy a Honda Pilot and renovate her house.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Johnsonburg Borough Police Department conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Bittler. Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

Bittler’s guilty plea came before Senior United States District Judge David S. Cercone, who scheduled sentencing for October 4, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. The law provides for a total sentence of 60 years in prison, a fine of $750,000, or both.

The actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant. Pending sentencing, the court continued Bittler on bond.
