A West Virginia woman has been sentenced to prison for her role in a bank fraud scheme that lasted four years and resulted in over $120,000 in embezzled funds.
Melissa Evans, 49, of Palestine, was sentenced to 21 months in prison for her crimes, which included stealing checks mailed to a dental practice in Parkersburg and fraudulently depositing them into her own bank account.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, Evans worked as the financial coordinator for the dental practice and had access to the practice’s bank accounts.
Over the course of four years, Evans stole more than 300 checks and embezzled over $120,000, which she used for her own personal gain.
The United States Secret Service and the Parkersburg Police Department conducted the investigation into Evans’ crimes, and United States District Judge Irene C. Berger imposed the sentence.
Assistant United States Attorney Kathleen Robeson handled the prosecution of Evans’ case.
Evans will also be required to pay a total of $145,000 in restitution as part of her sentence, which is in addition to the 21 months she will spend in prison.
