Melissa Wolf Black, Larceny, South Dakota 2016

A woman from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 15 months in custody for larceny in a case investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.

Melissa Wolf Black, 34, was convicted of Larceny after she stole a pickup truck worth $37,000 from Lindskov Motors Dealership on June 26, 2015. Wolf Black, who had just been released from prison in May 2015 after serving time for stealing a different truck, took the keys to the vehicle without permission and drove it later that evening.

According to the indictment, Wolf Black told Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal police officers that she had purchased the vehicle earlier that day, but the officers were unable to find the registration or proof of purchase in the truck. The vehicle was later confirmed to have been taken without permission.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney SaraBeth Donovan, who successfully argued that Wolf Black had committed a serious crime.

The U.S. Marshals Service took Wolf Black into custody immediately after sentencing. Wolf Black is currently serving a 15-month sentence and will be under supervised release for 2 years after her release.

The sentence includes a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The total value of the stolen property, a 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck, is $37,000.

The crime occurred on June 26, 2015, and Wolf Black was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 10, 2015. She pled guilty on January 7, 2016.

This case is a reminder of the importance of law enforcement and the consequences of committing serious crimes.
